Ann Arbor, MI, 1996
While cycling up Provo Canyon in Utah, my brother Grant came across a mule deer fetus lying next to the white line of the road. Its mother, whose body lay off the roadside had been hit by a vehicle, causing her to abort her fetus. Grant collected the fetus, packed it in dry ice and shipped it to me. A few months later, my wife and I created this "picnic" in a city park, while our son, Adrian watched from his stroller. I photographed the picnic and used the image for the exhibition postcard for my installation, Picnic at the Footstool.
