Mother Earth

Ann Arbor, MI, 1996

During the last week of March, as I was preparing my garden beds, I asked my pregnant wife to come out of the house and lie naked in one of the beds.  I covered her up with dirt and then photographed her belly rising above the black soil.  A week later, our son Adrian was born.  Later, we discovered that his name in some cultures, means "dark earth."  I used the top image as the photograph for the exhibition postcard for my installation Burrowing into the Earth.
