Seasons

2007-08

These four boxes are part of a larger series of work, with each box inspired by a place-based, site-specific installation that I have designed and created. My desire was to create smaller sculptures (with dimensions of 4” wide x 96” high that would fit from the floor to the ceiling in most rooms of a common house) based on these past installations and using similar materials. The four boxes displayed here are from the first five that I built, and each box is named after one of the seasons: springsummer, autumnwinter.

Within each box there are symbols of life, death, and rebirth. The materials are as follows:

spring: Abert “squirrel” sticks, an Abert squirrel skeleton, and Ponderosa pine pitch.

summer: plastic containers of coal slurry, oil, and minerals, baby bottle nipples, each with a kernel of corn, and a deer vertebra.

autumn: acorns, Ponderosa pine pitch, wire, and a deer skull.

winter: shelled corn, disposable baby diapers, each with a kernel of blue Hopi corn, and a full deer fetus skeleton.
