Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1996

While cycling up Provo Canyon in Utah, my brother Grant came across a mule deer fetus lying next to the white line of the road.  Its mother, whose body lay off the roadside, had been hit by a vehicle, causing her to abort her fetus.  It was eventually packed in dry ice and shipped to me.  A few months later, my wife and I created this “picnic” in a city park, while our newborn son watched from his stroller.
